Prenatal Care

Appointments are scheduled for 1 hour and take place in my clinic on Thursdays.  Your appointment will include clinical assessments, education, counseling, and opportunities to have your questions and concerns addressed.

To ensure optimal care, your prenatal visits will be scheduled as follows:

  • 0-28 weeks gestation  - Once per month

  • 28-36 weeks - Once every 2 weeks

  • 36 weeks to birth - Once every week, one of which will be a  home visit.

I encourage your husband/partner to accompany you to prenatal appointments whenever possible.  Please keep all prenatal appointments in a timely manner. If changes need to be made, please provide as much advance notice as possible and be aware that your appointment will end as scheduled.  If I am attending a birth, I will email or text you to reschedule your appointment.

Serology

Labs will be drawn in clinic.  Results will be discussed at your next prenatal appointment.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is not required, but if desired will be done at 20 weeks. If there is a specific concern with baby's growth or development, utilization of ultrasound for a medical diagnosis is imperative. You will be referred to a specialist for this service.

Nutritional Counseling

Proper nutrition is imperative for a healthy pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery and baby. Whole food nutrition and supplementation is expected and will prevent complications that can occur in the pregnancy and the birth process. A holistic approach to health and wellness will be the focus throughout your entire care as we educate you to live a healthier lifestyle and have optimal outcomes.

Chiropractic Care

As part of our holistic approach, I strongly urge you to receive regular care with a qualified chiropractor throughout your pregnancy and following the birth.  The benefits of chiropractic care to the mother and baby are tremendous, which include minimal discomfort in the prenatal period, facilitation of a quicker less painful birth and optimal postpartum recovery.  Newborns experience a healthier transition to life outside the womb.

Childbirth Classes

Education and knowledge are key to having an optimal birth and recovery period.  Classes are required for all parents expecting their first baby or those who are planning their first home birth.

Birth Attendance

It is imperative that you contact me at the first sign of labor. We will discuss where you are in the labor process and determination will be made as to when I will come attend you.  I will attend you throughout your labor, birth and immediate postpartum period. Following the birth, I will assist you with breastfeeding if needed.  Once breastfeeding is established, I will conduct a newborn exam. You can expect my attendance for approximately 2-3 hours following delivery.

Assistants

I will be accompanied by one or two individuals who will assist me during your prenatal appointments, birth and postpartum care.

Pre and Post Maturity

Due to the increased risks associated with prematurity and post maturity, labors prior to 36 weeks or after 42 weeks will be assessed on an individual basis and a determination made for place of delivery.

Breeches

If a breech is discovered prenatally, efforts will be made to turn the baby to a vertex position.  If a breech is discovered during labor, the situation will be assessed and a determination made for the place of delivery.

Twins

If twins are discovered prenatally, each case will be assessed on an individual basis and I will assist the family in the home or hospital based on the risk factors involved.

Lactation Counseling

Breastfeeding provides perfect nutrition for your baby and expedites the completion of the birth process.  Encouragement and support is given to mothers to facilitate breastfeeding.

Neonatal Blood Screening

The State of Kansas requires lab work which tests for Amino Acid (PKU), Endocrine, Fatty Acid Oxidation and Hemoglobin Disorders, Organic Acid Conditions, and other disorders.  Kansas parents may opt out of the testing procedure for religious reasons only.  If you opt out of the testing procedures, you will be required to sign a written statement.

Birth Certificate

I will certify and file a legal birth certificate with the Kansas Vital Statistics Department.
